Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool have expressed interest in acquiring the signature of Zambian International Striker Patson Daka. According to reports, United have joined the Reds in the race to sign Red Bull Salzburg star.

United are yet to make a signing in the transfer window and have been regularly linked with a move for a new striker.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made Anthony Martial his first-choice forward with Odion Ighalo extending his loan until January 2021 to provide cover. Mason Greenwood can also operate down the middle despite the majority of his game time coming from the wing.

Nevertheless, The Sun report United are interested in signing Daka this summer on the back of his exceptional season in Austria.

The 21-year-old performed admirably following Erling Haaland’s departure to Borussia Dortmund, scoring 24 goals in 31 appearances in the Austrian Bundesliga as well as registering eight assists.

Daka is reportedly wanted by United and a host of other top European clubs as a result of his form but would cost upwards of £20million given he signed a new contract last year that runs until 2024.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp on the other hand is looking for fresh additions to his squad and Daka could fit in his playing style without sweat. Klopp’s much-famed pressing-system is something both Leipzig and Salzburg have used to great effect in Germany and Austria, respectively.

The 21-year-old Daka is currently contracted to Salzburg until 2024, so is unlikely to come cheap, but that shouldn’t dissuade the Reds, who saw him score twice against them in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday.

Underpinning Daka’s impressive goal-scoring feats is his composure in front of goal. The Zambia international never appears phased in front of goal, and his intelligence often buys him the yard or two required to get a shot off. A constant threat that is eager to move into any space a defence may leave for him; his ability to combine with teammates and run selflessly for others is another facet of his well-rounded game. 

Keen to run in behind or receive the ball into feet, it is simply a matter of when, not if, Daka gets a move to a bigger league – much like former Salzburg striker Erling Haaland. For that reason, the Reds would be smart to jump the queue and get him signed up this summer.
