Millers SoNy Sugar have qualified for the semi finals of the KPL top 8 Knockout Tournament after beating Soldiers Ulinzi Stars 5-4 on post match penalties after a 1-1 regulation time scoreline.
The match was played at the Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium.
Ulinzi started strongly with John Makwata coming close but his effort hit the woodwork in the 10th minute.
Both teams were evenly matched as the game locked at 0-0 at the breather.
Upon resumption Oscar Wamalwa almost put the hosts ahead after a long throw from Rodgers Omond but Owiny saved from a Makwatta rebound.
Ulinzi Stars made a double substitution bring in Enos Ochieng and Ezekiel Otuoma for John Nairuka and John Makwatta respectively.
Marwa Chamberi beat Francis Ochieng with a thunderous shot in the 49th minute as the Sugar millers took an early lead.
Coach Robert Matano quickly brought in Daniel Waweru and the impact was evidently felt.
Sony Sugar were reduced to 10 men when Hamid Kwizera was sent off for a second bookable offense after a poor tackle on Evans Amwayi.
The soldier’s resilience finally paid off when Oscar Wamalwa equalized.
Both teams played cautiously as the match ended 1-1.
Sony scored all their penalties with captain Wanyama scoring the first followed by Ayugi then Asembeka Victor, Charles Bruno with Omunuk scoring the fifth and winner.Mohammed Rio’s penalty was however saved by Sony Sugar Veteran Allan Owing with Oscar Wamalwa,Enos Ochieng,Rodgers Omondi and Francis Ochieng scoring theirs.
They join already qualified Sofapaka and Gor Mahia in the last four
