Zambia Women’s National Team coach Bruce Mwape says the Copper Queens have set their sights on winning the 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Mwape believes his side of youth and experience has what it takes to fight for the coveted trophy at this year’s tournament that will be played in Nelson Mandela Bay from September 28-October 9.

“We are looking at new faces that we are planning to give chance to in the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers coming next month,” Mwape said after Tuesday’s training session at Edwin Imboela stadium.

“With or without regular players, our target is to win the tournament. We can’t go to a tournament to just to go and add numbers, we want to go there and compete.”

The Copper Queens are in Group C alongside Eswatini, Namibia and Uganda and open their campaign against guests Uganda on October 5.

“We know that our opponents will come prepared because they saw us play at the (Tokyo 2020) Olympics and were able to pick tactics from our side including strengths and weaknesses but since we are going with a new squad, we will change some of these tactics we were using in the Olympic games,” Mwape said.

Eight players from the Tokyo outing have made the 28-member provisional squad but due to club commitments, most of them will join camp on Thursday, in time for the technical bench to conclude with their assessments.

The Copper Queens best showing at the COSAFA Women’s Champions was a second place finish at the 2019 edition.
