AFC Leopards on Sunday slowed down Gor Mahia’s title charge after defeating the record Kenyan champions 2-1 in the 96th Mashemeji Derby played at Nyayo Stadium.
The crucial FKF Premier League match played in front of club patron Raila Odinga and President William Ruto attracted thousands of fans who went home after 90 minute of pure entertainment from players of both teams.
Victor Omune gave Ingwe the lead in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot before Austin Odhiambo restored parity in the 39th minute.
Maxwell Otieno restored Leopards’ advantage two minute to the break.
Speaking after the match, Gor Mahia head coach Jonathan McKinstry rued missed chances to the defeat while calling out the center referee from denying them another a clear-cut penalty.
“We created a lot of chances in the game but failed to use them. I am disappointed that we could not come out of the derby with maximum points.
“Certain decisions on the field also affected us like the clear penalty call we were denied that even replays showed we deserved one. However, we played well and must improve on the next game,” said McKinstry.
The Irish tactician however said all is not lost and they are still in contention to win the title.
“We still have the chance to move back on top despite today’s set back. We have a big game against Tusker and I believe we can beat them. All is not lost. We need to rectify the mistakes we witnessed especially set pieces and we will be okay,” added McKinstry.
