Côte d’Ivoire are the new African Champions after beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Sunday.
The Elephants picked up their third trophy in history after qualifying from the group stages as one of the third best placed teams.
William Troost-Ekong had put Nigeria in the lead in the first half rising above the Ivorian defense to head in.
Nigeria went into the break with the advantage. But the Elephants came back fighting in the second half.
Franck Kessié equalized for the hosts heading in Simon Adingra’s corner to bring the home crowd to it’s feet.
Simon Adingra was a gem to watch as he put in marvelous balls into the Nigeria penalty area.
Sebastian Haller managed to get in the end of one of Adingra’s crosses and scored to put Côte d’Ivoire ahead in the game.
The Super Eagles could not find the equalizer as the hosts held on to win their third AFCON trophy in History.
