Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is still ‘hurting’ after he was let go by the club last week.
The 37-year-old was relieved of his duties just when Masandawana returned to preseason training. The move shocked the entire South African football fraternity .The young coach spent over a decade with Sundowns and was promoted to head coach a few years ago.
Speaking to Sunday World, Rulani Mokwena admitted he was still healing.
“I am sorry I cannot say much. I signed a confidentiality clause with the club and I have to respect that. The wound is still fresh, and I want to recover,” he told the publication.
According to reports, Mokwena was given the boot after falling out with Downs’ sporting director. Since his departure from Sundowns, the youthful coach has been linked with a move to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic.
“I am hearing a lot of things and my agent is handling those things. “Right now, I just want to recharge at Black Poison,” Mokwena said.
Speaking on the Marawa Sports Worldwide, the former Masandawana coach revealed he would be coaching an amateur team.
“I am already employed, I am going to coach Black Poison now for the next few weeks. Hopefully, I can revitalize myself and I can get a passion for football and coaching because I have lost it a little bit.”
Rulani Mokwena’s agent Steve Kapelushnick confirmed there was interest but refused to give further details.
“Obviously everything is still so fresh at the moment, but our phones haven’t stopped ringing – Rulani had a fantastic spell at Sundowns. It’s sad to have come to an end, but we will sit down and consider our options. That might be locally or abroad, we will see,” he said.
Last season, Rulani Mokwena was named the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season.
