Rwanda Amavubi to continue as promising underdogs against Nigeria

Rwanda Amavumbi  will be striving to continue their run as the promising underdogs of Group C in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers when they go up against Nigeria at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday evening.

Algerian coach Adel Amrouche was appointed the new head coach of the Rwanda national football team in the beginning of this month, and the tactician who previously managed Tanzania has signed a two-year contract with Amavubi.

Amrouche has also managed other national teams such as Kenya, Libya, Burundi, Botswana and Yemen.

The Super Eagles also have a new coach in charge, with former Mali coach Eric Chelle at the helm. He has placed high expectations on the team as they go into their qualifying matches.

Striker Victor Osimhen stated that he has a clear understanding of the coach’s objective going into the match against Rwanda.

“It takes more than a coach to win football matches. Players must also be at their best, show commitment, and bear in mind that we can all fly together to reach our goal,” says Osimhen.

“There’s a new manager now, and we are desperately looking forward to the game against Rwanda to try to correct all the previous mistakes we’ve made and put ourselves in a better position to qualify.”

Chelle included two players from Nigeria’s domestic league, goalkeeper Kayode Bankole and midfielder Papa Daniel Mustapha, emphasising his commitment to developing local talent.

The Super Eagles have struggled, earning just three points in the World Cup qualifiers, while Rwanda could extend their lead to seven points with a victory.
