We beat Uganda U23 and we imagined we are the best thing that ever happened to East Africa’s football. Sadly when we meet our age mates, we can’t even beat Zanzibar. It is worth to note that these are not countries that we could hardly consider strong footballing nations.

Problem with us Kenyan football fans is we are so short sighted and we have set the bench mark way too low to the extent that we start counting a win over a Ugandan developmental side as milestone. After a loss like today’s thumping in the hands of lowly Zanzibar we go back to our usual blame game. We blame everyone from the player, to the technical bench to federation.

If there’s one thing that our experience in failure should have taught us by now is that there is no shortcut to success. When Uganda ‘s head coach Micho stated that his team that we beat 2-0 was just but a developmental side most of us were quick to come up with fancy hash tags to deride him and his team. Truth is Uganda have a plan for their football and their commitment to that plan is so strong and passionate that a short term goal like winning a regional tourney like CECAFA cannot supercede it.

I hope that the draw against Burundi and the heavy defeat to Zanzibar, who all happen to be in the same age bracket as our boys and not developmental sides, will be a wake up call to all football stakeholders. We are still way off the mark and we should not be lulled into believing that everything if fine by sporadic positive results here and there. We must go back to the drawing board. Or better still we should try and own a drawing board.
