www.soka25east.com looks at the permutations ahead of the final matches of the Champions League Group C games on Tuesday
As the Caf Champions League group stages reaches its conclusion on Tuesday, the calculators will once again be out as fans weigh their sides’ chances of progression in the lucrative competition.
While the likes of Wydad Casablanca, TP Mazembe and Egyptian giants Al Ahly among others have all ensured qualification, in Group C,Mamelodi Sundowns have not been as lucky.
With only one game remaining for the former African champions in the campaign, it has become a a do-or-die encounter as they host Horoya in their own backyard.
Only victory against Horoya will guarantee Sundowns’ passage into the knockout rounds as they sit in third place, three points adrift of their opponents.
However, while the Guinean champions do have a better goal difference, Caf rules stipulate that in the event of a tie, head-to-head will be utilised.
This means that after both sides played out to a 2-2 draw in Conakry, victory for Sundowns would assure them of a place in the next round.
But should Sundowns be unable to leave the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville with anything less than maximum points then it would be Horoya who will advance into the next round for the first time in their history.
Meanwhile, the other game which will be played at the same time in Lomé, can be regarded as a dead rubber.
Togo-Port have already been eliminated from the Champions League and even if Wydad do suffer defeat, they possess a better head-to-head record over Horoya.
This means that although the Guineans could end up with three points and be level on 11 points with the Moroccan giants, it will not be enough to top the Group C standings.
Just like Sundowns, Horoya played out to a draw at home only to be put to the sword in Casablanca.
