AFCON 2015: GHANA CHECK-MATE HOSTS TO BOOK A DREAM FINAL WITH IVORY COAST

By Fredrick Nadulli,

Ghana 3-0 Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea’s fairy tale run was brought to a screeching halt by Ghana in the capital Malabo on a night African football witnessed some despicable scenes. The hosts were largely subdued, but not before Mubarak Wakaso had a huge let off when he appeared to have lost possession to Iban Edu on twenty two minutes that the referee adjudged illegal. From that point on it was the Black Stars all the way.
Goalkeeper Felipe Ovono tripped Kwesi Appiah as he bore down on goal five minutes before half time. Jordan Ayew ,picked in the starting team for injured skipper Asamoah Gyan, sent Ovono the wrong way to give Ghana the lead. Celtic midfielder Mubarak Wakaso doubled their advantage on the stroke of half time, converting a Christian Atsu cross following a speedy counter attack.Stand-in captain Andre Ayew joined his younger brother on the scoresheet, sweeping in Appiah’s pass on seventy five minutes.
The game was halted eight minutes from time when pockets of Ghana fans were pelted with water bottles and forced onto the stadium tartan truck. A police chopper hovered above the Malabo stadium as security personel frantically tried to restore normalcy and resume play. The match eventually ended, seemingly eight minutes short of the ninety.
Equatorial Guinea face DRC in the third place playoff on Saturday as Ghana square off with Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday.
