Afcon 2019: Madagascar stun Super Eagles, Guinea win to rekindle hopes

Debutants Madagascar produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Nigeria in Alexandria on Sunday.

Lalaina and Carlos Andrea were on target as Nicolas Dupuis’ men stunned the Nigerians with a masterclass performance.

Madagascar dominated from start finish and as early as 13 minutes the Super Eagles were caught napping after Leon Balogun was beaten to the ball by Lalaina. The forward rounded Enzenwa and slotted home in an empty net.

Carlos Andrea scored from a freekick, the ball deflected off Ndidi and into the net much to the delight of the Madagascar defense.

The win means Madagascar top Group A on 7 points while Nigeria are second on 6 points.

Meanwhile, Guinea beat 10 men Burundi 2-0 in Cairo to give themselves hope of qualifying to the last 16 as one of the best third placed team.

Mohamed Yattara scored a brace to secure a total haul of 4 points. Paul Put’s men will now wait to see if they will make it to the knockout stages.
