The Black Stars of Ghana got off to a disappointing start in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Benin in their Group F encounter at the Ismailia Stadium on Tuesday night.
Mickael Pote’s brace secured a point for the Squirrels against a 10 man Ghanian side that had John Boye sent off with a second yellow for delaying play.
Ghana coach started Andre alongside his brother Jordan but there was no room for veteran striker Asamoah Gyan. Steve Mounie played the whole 90 minutes for the Squirrels of Benin.
Benin took an early lead, Pote striking just after 2 minutes but the Black Stars responded immediately through Andre Ayew’s left footed effort on 9 minutes.
Jordan Ayew put Ghana in front 3 minutes from half-time with a neat finish in the top corner much to the delight of the Ghanaian bench.
Ghana were reduced to ten men after a moment of madness from experienced defender John Boye saw him receive a second yellow card for delaying play.
His sending off proved to be costly for Ghana as Mickael Pote equalised for the Squirrels in the 63rd minute.
The game ended in a draw and quite disappointing results for Kwesi Appiah and his Ghana team. Benin on the other hand happy to walk away with a point.
