Kenya’s Harambee Stars failed to go top of the 2021 African Cup of Nations Group G standings after Togo held them to a 1-1 draw at Kasarani on Monday.
Kenya would have gone top with four points after Egypt and Comoros drew 0-0 in the other match in the group had they hung onto their lead. Johanna Omollo scored the hosts’ goal before Hakim Oura-Sama equalised for Togo.
Kenya took the lead in the 36th minute when Omollo dispossessed Ouro-Sama just outside the box and created himself enough space to take aim at goal.
Oura-Sama then equalised for the Sparrowhawks four minutes after the hour mark after he rose highest to meet a corner ball and headed powerfully past Otieno.
Michael Olunga, who had little impact in the game, missed two opportunities late on as Kenya were left rueing the chances that went abegging.
Kenya XI: Ian Otieno, Samuel Olwande, Joseph Okumu, Joash Onyango, Eric Ouma, Victor Wanyama, Lawrence Juma, Johanna Omollo, Eric Johanna, Cliff Nyakeya, Michael Olunga.
Togo XI: Malcolm Barcola, Steve Lawson, Hakim Ouro-Sama, Djene Dakonam, James Adewale Olufade, David Philippe Henen, Mathieu Dossevi, Koffi Atchou, Lalawele Atakora, Kodjo Fo Doh Laba, Peniel Mlapa.
