The oldest tournament in Africa is back after two years
The Council for East and Central Africa will begin this year November 18th -25th in Kenya
Speaking exclusively to Soka25east on phone ,CECAFA sec general Nicholas Musonye said the stadiums of Bukhungu,Mumias Sports complex all in Kakamega County ,Moi Stadium in Kisumu and Nakuru’s Afraha Stadium will be host stadium
“We are ready for the tournament ,Libya and Zimbabwe have been invited to replace Eritrea and Djibouti who will not attend .We will hold another presser next week to discuss the title sponsors and logistics ” Musonye told Soka25east. com
The tournament was last played in Kenya and since them it has not taken off due to the wrangles which has made it impossible for the federation to hold both the senior challenge and club tournaments
The tournament started as the Gossage cup in 1926 involving Kenya,Uganda,Tanganyika and Zanzibar before changing its name to CECAFA with Zambia,Malawi,Sudan,Ethiopia,Somalia joining
It was not played in 1950 as Gossage and the title was shared in 1951 between Uganda and Kenya.The tournament began proper in 1967 as CECAFA and in 1986 and 1993 the tournaments were not held as both Somalia and Uganda who were hosts withdrew.It was also not held in 1997 and 1998 after it was suspended .Recently in 2014 after Ethiopia withdrew it was not held but later Uganda who are the defending champions won it in 2015.
It was not held last year after Sudan and later Kenya who were to host withdrew due to wrangles in the Federation
Uganda are the defending champions.
