Nigeria and Ghana will face each other once again at an international sports tournament when the respective countries U-23 teams clash at the ongoing All Africa Games on Wednesday September 8 in Brazzaville.
Coach Samson Siasia’s dream team will face the Ghanaians in their first match of the tournament after Egypt pulled out of the Mundial. Both nations have met at U-23 level four times with Nigeria claiming two victories over Ghana’s lone victory. A match has also been drawn at this stage.
Their first meeting was in July 2007 in an Olympic Games qualifier which Nigeria won 3-2 while the return leg of the qualifier was played in November 2007 and it ended in a goalless draw.
The two teams have met at the AAG qualifiers before. In 2011 Nigeria defeated the Black Stars 3-1 while the return leg in July 2011 was won 2-0 by Ghana, hence denying Nigeria a Chance in the 2011 AAG.
Ghana held Senegal to a draw over the weekend and will be hoping to get all three points against a strong Ghanaian side.
In the women category,After being denied a chance to make it to the Olympic Games, Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons, began their quest to win a third All Africa Games football gold in Congo Brazzaville in style on Sunday as they thrashed hosts Congo 5-1 in the opening game.
The Falcons next game will be against Tanzania on Wednesday.
