Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has met with Gabon coach Patrice Neveu and agreed to join the squad for their upcoming fixtures, according to the coach himself.
Aubameyang has had a very rough time with Gabon in the last year or so. The striker drew critism from his country’s fans last October, before admitting he was considering retiring in March, after a falling out with people in the Gabon FA.
Gabon failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, and they haven’t played a match since then. However, they have fixtures planned in October and November, and coach Neveu says he met with Aubameyang to convince him to play in those matches.
“I was ready to go see him in London,” Neveu said (via France Football). “Then there was talk of Laval where his mother lives. We finally agreed to Paris on a day of rest granted by Unai Emery. And it went very well! In fact, we were both waiting for this meeting.
“Pierre-Emerick has told me he will be there, the national team can count on him.”
Gabon have two friendly matches against Burkina Faso on 10th October and Morocco on 15th October, before AFCON qualification begins again with matches against DR Congo and Angola in November.
Aubameyang is Gabon’s greatest-ever goalscorer, though records vary over exactly how many he’s scored for his country. RSSSF.com have him down as scoring 24 goals in 59 games, and they appear to have the most complete statistics.
The striker hasn’t played more than four games in a calendar year since 2015, so if he does feature in all the October and November fixtures it’ll be his busiest international year of the last four.
