Zimbabwe national womens team Mighty Warriors lost to Egypt by a lone goal to dim there hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2016 African Women’s Cup of Nations.
In a match marred by controversial officiating on Tuesday evening Salma Ahmed scored the decisive for the North Africans in the 83rd minute to hand them the win.
In the first half, Zimbabwe coach Shadreck Maluzi employed a three players midfield to stifle Egypt’s attack, the Mighty Warriors largely enjoyed smooth rides to the penalty area, helped in part by repeated mistakes from skipper Ahmed.
The midfielder gave away possession in his own half more than once as Zimbabwe repeatedly tried their luck from the edge of the area, with goalkeeper on alert to thwart a couple of shots.
Rutendo Makore had a great chance to score for Mighty Warriors with a free header but could only put her effort wide in the notable first half attack.Egypt started pushing hard creating numerous chances but failed to utilize them.
Egyptians got their lead ten minutes to the end of match with the Mighty Warriors responding quickly and were denied a genuine equalizer minutes later when Felistas Muzongondi placed the ball into the back of the net from an onside position only for the referee to rule out the goal.
The win puts Egypt on a pile position to join hosts Cameroon in the semifinals and they will likely face they winners of Group B that has Nigeria and Kenya as well as Ghana and Mali.
