Result: Azam 4-3 (7-3 agg) Bidvest Wits
Date: 20 March 2016
Venue: Dar Es Salaam
Bidvest Wits were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup by Azam on Sunday as they lost 4-3 in the second leg and 7-3 on aggregate.
The Clever Boys were off to a rough start as Kipre Tchetche buried the ball in the back of the net with a header from Ramadhan Singano’s cross in the 23rd minute.
The tie was virtually over in the 42nd minute as Azam doubled their lead and made it 5-0 on aggregate thanks to John Bocco who found a way past novice goalkeeper Jethren Barr.
Gavin Hunt’s men fought back admirably to reduce the gap a minute before the interval as Jabulani Shongwe netted the visitors’ first goal.
However, the hosts’ two-goal cushion was restored by Tchetche 10 minutes into the second half as he completed his brace on the day.
Abednego Mosiatlhaga scored a consolation goal for Wits to give the scoreline a respectable look, but Tchetche completed his hattrick just before the end to make it 4-2.
Henrico Botes brought Wits back within one goal as he scored in the last minute of normal time, but it was never going to be enough to change the outcome.
Here’s how they lined up:
Azam: Manula, Bocco, Kapomba, Singand, Ambrose, Wawa, Nyoni, Kipre B., Mkami, Salum, Kipre T
Wits: Barr, Lecki, Gome, Pule, Jordan, Nhlapo, Mosiatlhaga, Ntsundwana, Bhasera, Sekese, Khumalo
