Tanzania’s Azam FC will look to wrap up progression to the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup when they host South Africa’s Bidvest Wits on Sunday. Kick-off in Dar Es Salaam is set for 14h00 CAT.
Azam claimed an emphatic 3-0 away win over Wits in the first leg in Johannesburg last weekend, with goals from Salum Abubakar, Shomari Kapombe and Raphael Bocco putting the Tanzanian side well in control of the tie.
Wits, who fielded a weakened line-up due to a congested fixture schedule, paid the price for possibly underestimating their opponents, who were only formed back in 2007 and have no African pedigree to speak of.
Gavin Hunt’s side will not make the same mistake again, though given the situation they find themselves in the tie they may well opt to once again field youngsters and look to give them experience, rather than risk their ‘big guns’ for what looks to be a lost cause.
The winners are likely to face Esperance de Tunis in the second round. The Tunisian heavyweights claimed a 2-0 away win over Chad’s Renaissance last weekend and look in a strong position to wrap up progression when they host the return in Rades on Saturday.
South Sudanese referee Gait Metodious Oting will take charge of the match between Azam and Wits in Dar Es Salaam.
