Former Guinea national team head coach, Bernard Simondi, could be in line for his second stint with the Syli Nationale.
According to reports coming out of Conakry, the current Olympique de Khourigba (of Morocco) coach is s the favorite to take over the country’s hot seat.
The ex-French international is understood to be in the country for past one week lobbying through senior government officials to have the local federation reinstate him at the national helm.
The 64-year-old with other top coaches like Kenya’s current coach Paul Put, Hugo Broos and Giovanni Trapattoni are among those widely speculated to be shortlisted for the job.
The Syli Nationale job fell vacant after the Guinea Football Federation (Feguifoot) sacked Kanfory Bangoura last month following their failure to qualify for the quarter-finals of the recently concluded African Nations Championship in Morocco.
Simondi, the former Al Ahli (of Qatar) and Burkina Faso coach took the helm of the Guinea national team in 2000 with the goal of qualifying for the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations 2002 editions. In the World Cup qualifiers, the Syli Nationale was in position two of Group E, thanks to victories against Burkina Faso (3-2) and Zimbabwe (3-0).
However, FIFA decided to ban Guinea after the government interfered with the matters concerning the local federation. Simondi’s last match as Guinea manager was against Malawi where both teams played on January 28, 2001 in a match that resulted to one all draw.
