Lehlohonolo Majoro scored the only goal of the game as Bidvest Wits edged Absa Premiership strugglers Maritzburg United 1-0 at Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein on Friday evening.
Victory moves the Clever Boys five points clear atop the league standings while the Team of Choice remain five points from safety and at the foot of the table, having now lost seven league games in succession.
The Team of Choice threatened early through Yannick Zakri, but the first notable chance fell at the opposite end as Deon Hotto forced Ricard Ofori into a top save. The Ghanaian goalkeeper getting down well in the ninth minute to direct the forward’s free-kick onto the woodwork and out of danger.
It was quick becoming the Ofori show with the shot-stopper at it again on the stroke of half-time. The goalkeeper with a reaction save to keep Siyanda Xulu’s attempted clearance from bulging the back of the net.
The goal-minder, though, erased all his good work with a moment of madness in the 79th minute as he rushed to try and claim a through ball aimed at Majoro. The forward beat the stopper to the punch before firing home from a tight angle.
Majoro should’ve completed his brace 10 minutes later following a hand ball from Rushine de Reuck, but the he was denied from the penalty spot by Ofori who went some way to make up for his earlier error with a great save. It mattered little end the end, though, as Wits claimed all three points.
