Ethiopia is braced for one of the biggest and most mouth watering Sheger derby slated for today in Addis Ababa pitting bitter arch rivals St.George also known as Kidus Giorgis against Ethiopia Coffee also known as Bunna.
St. George is without any doubt one of the most successful Ethiopian football clubs. Since its establishment in 1935, the club enjoyed frequent periods of success. The club was formed by Greeks when Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. Founded by Ayele Atnash and George Dukas, the club quickly became the symbol of Ethiopian nationalism and a representation of the country’s quest for freedom.
After the Italians were defeated, St. George briefly turned into a pictogram of identity for many Ethiopians. As there weren’t other Ethiopian clubs, it had been playing against foreign clubs.
On the other hand Ethiopia Coffee was formed in 1975 as Yebuna Negat and started playing at AEWA Factory workers third division. Within the next six years, it had amassed four trophies and one fair play award.
In 1983, its name was changed to Ethiopian Coffee Sports Club under the country’s National Coffee Trading Corporation, then a government enterprise.
The Sheger derby is set to captivate the country bringing it to a standstill in the football loving nations when the two giants lock horns in what is expected to be a ding dong battle full of great football and intrigues from both sets of fans.
The Sheger derby is the the name of the local derby it’s the other name of Addis Ababa.
