Ghana U20 succumbed to a 2-1 loss against Ethiopia Walia in the African Youth Championship qualifier on Sunday in Addis Ababa.
The Black Satellites suffered a 2-0 first-half setback after Mohammed Ome struck twice in the opening ten minutes of the clash (4th and 9th minutes) for the home side in Addis Ababa in the thrilling game. But Jonah Osabutey halved the deficit for Mas-Ud Dramani side’s late into the second-half.
Ghana, 2009 World Champions, went into the clash having enjoyed the advantage of a walkover and were hoping to establish superiority over the Eastern Africa side who proved to be a hard nut to crack as they displayed some beautiful football laced with quick passing game with goals.
Ghana’s line up featured Asante Kotoko’s prolific striker Dauda Mohammed but he failed to get on the score-sheet.
Satellites coach Masud Didi Dramani named an attacking-looking team, and for an away game on the continent, that’s usually not a good idea. The former Kotoko gaffer saw his pay for their constant attempts to go forward as early as the fourth minute.
The Satellites, to their credit and against the climactic disadvantage of high altitude, played their hearts out. Late in the second half, Jonathan Osabutey nicked a vital away goal that may prove decisive when the junior Walias visits Accra in two weeks.
The winner of the tie over the two legs will meet Tunisia or Senegal.
