The edition of the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) has
been cancelled.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) during its Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 announced the development.
The qualifiers of the tournament which were scheduled to start in April were suspended as the COVID-19 pandemic began to take root in
the continent.
The competition had been penciled for Congo Republic but they withdrew
due to financial reasons. Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea showed intentions to host.
A record number of countries, 36 had registered for the qualifying
stage of the tournament.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are the defending champions and have a
record number of African titles, 11, to their name.
