Morocco’s RS Berkane have advanced into the playoff round of the 2019/20 CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Ghanaian giants Ashanti Gold 2-0 at the Municipal Stadium in Berkane on Saturday night.
The result sees the Oranges overturn a 2-3 deficit from the first leg in Obuasi earlier in the month and advance 4-3 on aggregate.
Ashanti were up against the odds from as early as the eighth minute, as defender Musa Mohamed was shown a debatable straight red card.
Berkane took advantage of their numerical superiority just after the half-hour mark when Issoufou Dayo scored from close range to put the Moroccans 1-0 up.
The Ghanaians needed several excellent saves from goalkeeper Frank Boateng to keep themselves in the contest, but on the stroke of half time they went two goals down as Zaid Krouch scored a curler to make it 2-0 in favour of the Oranges.
The Miners put up a stronger showing in the second half and nearly pulled a goal back through Appiah McCarthy, who sent a long-range effort just off target.
Yet the visiting team from West Africa needed more heroics from ‘keeper Boateng, who continued to keep Berkane at bay with some exceptional saves.
Yet, ultimately, his efforts were in vain as Berkane (who finished as runners-up to Zamalek in the Confed Cup last season) claimed victory both on the night and overall.
