North African clubs proved their mettle on the African continent once more as they dominated the opening round of the 2019-20 Caf Confederations Cup group stages on Sunday.
Pyramids FC kicked off their maiden run in the CAFCC with a 3-1 away to Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers. The visitors scored three second-half goals following Emmanuel Olusesi’s sending off.
Fellow Egyptian club Al Masry also made a winning start to their campaign, with a stoppage-time winner from Karim El Eraki firing the club to victory in Mauritania and up to three points alongside Pyramids in Group A.
There were also wins for Hassania Agadir and last season’s runners-up RS Berkane as both Moroccan clubs also registered victories on the day.
In contrast, it was a tough day for both Nigerian clubs with Enyimba losing in Agadir to follow Enugu’s earlier setback, while South Africa’s Bidvest Wits were held to a 0-0 draw by Horoya in their first ever group stage game in the competition.
