The first leg matches for the Second Round in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup were completed this past weekend, with the competitions’ respective title holders – TP Mazembe and Etoile du Sahel – left in trouble after suffering defeats.
The teams are both competing in the Champions League at this stage and DR Congo giants Mazembe may well see their title defence cut short after losing 2-0 away to Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca – Abdelatif Noussir and Reda Hajhouj netted for the North Africans in a famous win in Marrakech.
Etoile du Sahel – winners of last year’s Confederation Cup – look likely to ‘drop’ into that competition after going down 3-0 away to Nigerian giants Enyimba. The West Africans ran riot in Port Harcourt, with Mfon Udoh scoring a fine hat-trick.
Other notable results in the Champions League saw Algeria’s ES Setif and Egyptian giants Al Ahly claiming valuable away draws against Al Merrikh and Young Africans respectively, while Zamalek beat MO Bejaia 2-0 and AS Vita club edged Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in Kinshasa thanks to a late, late goal from Kule Mbombo.
The Confederation Cup also threw up a few surprise results, with Tunisian unknowns Azam FC defeating Tunisian giants Esperance 2-1 in Dar Es Salaam and Gabon side CD Mounana beaing Egypt’s ENPPI 2-0. Morocco’s FUS Rabat, meanwhile, are as good as through to the playoff round thanks to a 7-0 home win over SC Villa of Uganda.
The return leg matches for both competitions will be played on the weekend of 22-24 April.
