Hubert Velud is not a very happy man after watching his side TP Mazembe let in two goals from St. George FC in a CAF Champions League match on Sunday 13.
The 5-times African Champions were largely dominated by the profligate host before a capacity crowd at Bahir Dar Stadium.
“I enjoyed the duel as both teams played an excellent football. I expected a game full of competition and the game turned out to be a very competitive one,” Velud said in an interview with CAF.
“We had our chances so was Saint George. I am content with the result. I am only disappointed that we conceded two goals,”
Bahailu Assefa scored a surprise opener for the “Horsemen” in the 11th minute, however, Ghanaian Daniel Adjei leveled for Mazembe in the extra minutes of first half.
Poor concentration in the defense of Kidus Giorgis again came to fore when Aschalew Tamene gifted the Lubumbashi giants with an own goal immediately on resumption,as the visitors went ahead for the first time in the tie.
Veteran Adane Girma however restored parity at the hour mark to cut shot Mazembe’s lead – settling the tie at 2-2 by full time.
Velud picked up vital lessons from the match;
“The game taught us that Saint George is a very good side and we should respect them. Hence, expect us to prepare in the best possible way for the return leg.” He concluded.
Zerihun Shengeta, Assistant Coach, Saint George is keeping the hope alive despite the glaring frailties exhibited by the Ethiopian heavyweights.
“It was a good game. Lack of concentration and some unnecessary mistakes cost us.
We played really well and could have emerged victorious. However, I have to give credit to the boys for their stupendous performance. We are not upset with the result. We have seen our weakness from the game. We will be looking forward to the return leg.”
Mazembe host the reverse tie in a week time at the their fortress, Stade Mazembe in Lubumbashi, DR Congo.
