Dr Phillip Chiyangwa, the president of both Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA), has threatened to take legal action aganist the Confederation of African Football president and the secretary general.
Chiyangwa, a campaign manager for Madagascar FA president Ahmad Ahmad who is seeking to unseat the long serving Issa Hayatou as CAF president,is unhappy with the African football governing body executive committee for putting his birthday party that he hosted on 23rd February as a matter to be discussed on Tuesday 14th March meeting.
In an interview with BBC, Chiyangwa who is at the centre of standoff with CAF dared the committee to discuss the party that he hosted in Harare aganist their wish after they termed it as a attempt to cause instability at the organisation.
“They shouldn’t dare me with silly innuendos – making nefarious allegations,” Chiyangwa told BBC Sport. “My legal team is preparing to go into battle against President Issa Hayatou and Secretary General Hicham El Amrani.”
“If necessary following any deliberations that are prejudicial to my interests and standing, I will be taking legal recourse to the extent that Hayatou and El Amrani will be held personally liable for defamation.”
The succesful birtday party which also served as celebrations for his unexpected appointment as president of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) in December, was attended by Fifa President Gianni Infantino together with other football officials from across the continent.
Hayatou, who has held the Caf top post since 1988, was against the Infantino’s election to the top football post and had said the continent would back Bahrain’s Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim al Khalifa.
CAF presidency elections will take place during the 39th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF that will take place on March 16 in Ethiopia.
