One of the candidates vying for CAF Executive Committee member in the February 2 elections, Patrice Edouard Ngaissona, is being accused of “crimes against humanity”.
Ngaissona, who is president of Central African Republic Football Federation, was confirmed earlier this month to vie for vacant post on CAF executive committee in an election which will be held in Morocco during the CAF’ s 40th Ordinary Assembly.
According to Al Wihda, human rights organizations in Bangui have reacted with alarm citing Ngaissona’s role in 2013 civil war where he held position of coordinator of the anti-Balaka armed movement.
His name and those of several other anti-Balaka commanders has been for long on a list of wanted persons issued by C.A.R. prosecutors but he has been circulating freely.
The Criminal Court in Bangui has been holding hearings to anti-Balaka rebels case with this year’s first session having took place on 11th January where Ngaissona name was mentioned.
Ngaisssona is said to have been involved in mass killings of Muslims in the diamond-rich but poverty-stricken nation which has been in crisis since late 2012, when violence broke out between Muslim and Christian rebel groups.
The long serving football administrator was in June last year elected as President of the Union of Football Federations of Central Africa (UNIFFAC) for two years term having scored seven out of eight votes.
In 2015, Ngaissona, was locked out of the Central Africa Republic Presidential polls by Constitutional Court due to his involvement in rebel activities.
