Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) will support Issa Hayatou’s re-election as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in next month’s elections in Addis Ababa.
Hayatou, 71, will be challenging for a record 8th term in office against 57-year-old Malagasy Football Federation (MFF) President Ahmad Ahmad.
The resolution was taken at CECAFA’s Extra Ordinary Meeting on 4th February 2017 in Libraville, Gabon.
“CECAFA MEMBERS unanimously express and reiterate their support for the candidature of President Issa Hayatou and urge members in other zones to rally behind our President,” a communication posted on CECAFA’s website on 9th February 2017, and signed by Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General reads in part.
However, speaking exclusively to Soka25east.com on 22nd February 2017, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Nick Mwendwa was clear CECAFA has not met to deliberate on who between the two candidates they will back.
“There has been not been any CECAFA meeting to decide on which candidate to support,” Nick said.
He added, “We are in the campaign season and as a federation we are open to all candidates to come and talk to us.”
CECAFA consists 12 members and will be critical in determining who leads CAF for the next four years.
