The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to investigate Rwanda Champions Rayon Sports officials over match fixing claims prior to their Champions League preliminary round return leg match against Burundian side Lydia Ludic Academic played on February 21 at Prince Louis Rwagasore in Bujumbura.
The outcome of the tie which resulted in a 2-1 aggregate loss for the Burundian outfit was claimed “not ordinary” in relation to the events that happened hours before the return match.
In a statement on Tuesday, the African governing body revealed it will carry out an inquiry into allegations allowing the concerned parties to respond by 6th March this year.
“We were notified of this matter the day before the match where we got information that officials of the visiting team Rayon Sports were seen in Room 501 of the fourth official’s hotel and other Lydia Ludic officials were present at the corridor in front of the room, ” reads the statement as translated from French.
“Following a confrontation by the host team officials,they tried to rush out of the hotel but the police detained the officials.
“The commissioner intervened and made his own investigations. He also got the hotel’s CCTV cameras recordings.”
Rayon Sports are scheduled to face South African giants and 2016 CAF Champions League winner, Mamelondi Sundowns in the first leg scheduled for March 6-7 in Kigali while the return leg will be staged in South Africa in the weekend of 16-18, 2018.
