Gor Mahia beat Supersport United 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup playoffs first leg played at Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium on Sunday.

Rwandan striker Jacques Tuyisenge netted the lone goal from the spot in the 78th minute to give the Kenyan champions the slim advantage ahead of the return match 10-days away in Pretoria.

The visitors sat back for the better part of the match and allowed Gor to do all the attacking as they defended with ease.

Kenyan international George “Backberry” Odhiambo and Ugandan-born Rwandan forward Meddie Kagere all came close for the hosts but couldn’t break the “Matsantsantsa.”

But substitute Boniface Omondi introduction proved the key as his corner kick with Kagere headed was handled by Supersport’s defender resulting in the penalty which Tuyisenge buried with panache.

The two sides return to domestic action before they meet again on Tuesday 17th March in Pretoria for the second leg.

The winner will cruise through to the group stage of second rate CAF’s interclub tournament.

Supersport were last season’s runners up, while Gor are seeking a maiden groups stage appearance in the continent since 1993.
