USM Alger of Algeria have appointed Frenchman Thierry Froger as their new coach, while Brazilian Roberto Oliveira Goncalves do Carmo has landed the job at Rwanda’s Rayon Sports.
55-year-old Froger together with his assistant Karim Khouda on Tuesday signed one-year “renewable” contracts to join the Reds and Blacks.
He succeeds 47-year-old Algerian-Frenchman Miloud Hamidi, who was dismissed after finishing a distant sixth in the Algerian League 1 in the just ended 2017-18 season as they missed out on the continental football next season.
This will be Froger’s second outing in Africa after briefly coaching five times African champions TP Mazembe of the DRC early last year.
The journey with the Ravens ended one month into a one-year contract in March 2017 after he failed to qualify the Lubumbashi giants to the 2017 CAF Champions League group stage against CAPS United of Zimbabwe, who edged them out on away goal’s rule after a 1-1 aggregate score in the final qualifying round.
The former Lille defender was also reported to have lost the dressing room.
His immediate assignment is to prepare USMA for the 2018 CAF Confederation group matches which resume after the World Cup.
The team is topping Group D of the tournament on four points after day two matches and will travel to Rayon Sports on 18th July for their next fixture.
Other group members include Gor Mahia of Kenya and Yanga SC of Tanzania.
Rayon Sports
Meanwhile Rayon Sports have announced Brazilian Roberto Oliveira Goncalves do Carmo as their new manager “till the end of the season and the upcoming one.”
The 57-year-old former Angola’s Atletico Sport Aviacao coach takes over from Belgian Ivan Minnaert, who has been promoted to sports director position.
Ivan’s short tenure as coach saw the Blues surrender their Rwandan Premier League title with three rounds to the end of the current season following a poor domestic form.
Roberto’s immediate work will be to get the team ready for the CECAFA Kagame Cup that starts in Tanzania next week.
