UD Songo humbled TP Mazembe 3-0 at Beira Stadium, Mozambique on Saturday, but the hosts fell short of denying the DR Congo heavyweights the CAF Champions League groups’ stage qualification.

Mazembe, who won the first leg in Lubumbashi 4-0 last week, managed to squeeze through on 4-3 aggregate for the first time in three attempts.

Mozambique international Justino Pelembe opened scoring for Songo seconds into the game with a superb strike that beat Ivorian Mazembe goal keeper Sylvian Gbohouo.

Jose Dinis doubled the lead three minutes after the breather before Pelembe grabbed his brace in the 75th minute, but they couldn’t get the fourth to second the tie into penalty.

Mazembe, who are five times African champions, failed to make the lucrative phase of the tournament in two past attempts but managed to win the CAF Confederations Cup twice during the period.

In other matches of the day, KCCA edged visiting St. George FC by Mohammed Shaban’s second half header to become the first Ugandan outfit to reach the CAF Champions League groups stage.

Swaziland’s Mbabane Swallows achieved the same feat after beating Zambia’s Zanaco FC by a similar margin to sail through on 3-1 aggregate.
