KCCA boss Mike Mutebi was not pleased with his team’s limited creativity in 1-0 triumph over Angola’s Primeiro de Agosto in the CAF Champions League preliminaries first leg at Philip Omondi Stadium yesterday.
The inability of his creative pack to deliver many cutting edge balls to strikers he opines is a “mentality”, the whole concept is “foreign” to them, he holds.
“The mentality of our players, they are not used to creating so many chances, it’s foreign, they are used to squeeze football,” Mutebi lamented.
Geoffrey Sserunkuma’s early second half strike secured the slim advantage after a tough first half – characterized by few clear cut chances in front of goal.
“It’s a new thing for players to understand the game. I must be very clear; players we talk about being creative are in the field running like headless chicken,” he bemoaned.
Mutebi, however, picked positives from the Ugandan champions’ game, and is confident of finishing the job – heading into the second leg in a week’s time in Angola.
“I felt we looked a little bit knowledgeable in our play, we were more organized than the last matches we played in the league.
“We have been quite orderly, the result is good enough, it gives us more confidence, and I’m sure we can go over there and score, we shall score, we have that ability to score” he exuded confidence.
Primiero de Agosto midfielder Ibukun Akinfewno believes playing on artificial pitch at Philip Omondi had a hand in their slim loss, as they are not used to such conditions.
“We are not used to synthetic, they play here every day, they are used to it, but for us it was like really strange. We lost but we did our best, and they now know we are not easy to beat.”
