10-man Zanaco have been bundled out of the African Champions League after going down 1-0 away to Wydad Casablanca at Mohamed V Complex, Casablanca Saturday.
Wydad proceed to the quarters as group D leaders on 12 points. They will be joined by Al Ahly (11 points) who thumped Coton Sport 3-1 at Borg El Arab Stadium, Alexandria to finish runners-up on goal difference.
Visitors Zanaco who topped the group on 11 points heading into tie needed at least a draw to book a spot in the last eight.
However, they crumbled in the 68th – allowing Ashraf Benchakri to capitalize on a poor clearance by goalkeeper Toaster Nsabta and drill home from close range.
Earlier in the 58th minute, Taonga Bwenbya was sent off for second bookable offense leaving the coach Numba Mumamba side with the daunting task of playing a man down.
In Alexandria, hosts and eight-time champions Al Ahly SC were ruthless – handing Coton Sport their sixth straight defeat with a 3-1 demolition.
The Cameroonians went ahead with Ahmed Fathi’s own goal in the 12th minute but, the lead barely lasted with Amr Gamal responding three minutes later.
Abdallah El-Said put the red devils in the lead in the 33rd minute off Momen Zakaria’s assist for a 2-1 half time score.
Gamal recorded his name on the score sheet – assisted by Ali Maaloul in the 54th minute to seal the game 3-1.
