The 2020 Women’s Olympic play-off between Cameroon and Chile scheduled for April 9 and 15 has been postponed to a later date yet to be confirmed following the coronavirus pandemic.
The Covid-19 outbreak has brought sporting activities, football included to a grinding halt worldwide. 163 countries, including Cameroon and Chile have been affected and have confirmed positive cases.
On Tuesday, Fifa announced the decision to suspend the playoff in a bid to avert health risks and challenges to the teams.
“Due to the challenges and assessed risks currently posed by Covid-19, the two legged-playoff series between Cameroon and Chile for a ticket to Tokyo 2020 initially scheduled for April have been postponed to later dates, to be confirmed,” FIFA tweeted.
Cameroon slipped into the playoff after losing out on Zambia on away goals following a 4-4 aggregate score.
The Indomitable Lionesses are hoping to return to the Olympics for a second time after their dubut in 2012.
Chile are looking to seal a first ever qualification to the summer games.
The winner will join hosts Japan, Brazil, New Zealand, Great Britain, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, United States, Zambia and Australia for the 2020 Women’s Olympic football tournament in Tokyo.
