It was yet another blank drawn by an African team at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup as Cameroon succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Switzerland in a Group G opener at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday.
The only goal of the match came from Breel Embolo who slotted the winner in the 48th minute to seal all the three points for Switzerland.
Rigobert Song was hoping to get a victory with his team on the front foot from the beginning but it was poor finishing in the final third with the likes of Mbuemo, Karl Toko Ekambi and Choupo Moting failing to find the back of the need.
The Indomitable Lions were looking comfortable on the ball from most parts of the first half with Swiss Captain Granit Xhaka and Xhedan Shaqiri struggling to find the right passes into the right channels.
The first half ended goalless with both managers looking to change something in the second period.
It was Switzerland who found the breakthrough with Cameroon born striker Embolo scoring against his country of birth. The Monaco forward waited patiently in the penalty area and calmly slotted past Andre Onana. Out of respect for his native Cameroon Embolo did not celebrate the goal.
Cameroon could not fashion any opening and fell to defeat and now their attention will shift to an Assignment against Serbia on Monday 28th November, 2022.
