Cameroon finished second in Group B of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday following their 2-0 victory over Tunisia in Casablanca.
An early strike by attacker Michaela Abam and a late goal from Ajara Nchout gave the Indomitable Lionesses the win at the Stade Mohammed V.
The victory in the Moroccan city took Cameroon to five points, helping them to progress to the quarter-finals of the women’s flagship football competition in Africa.
Despite the defeat Tunisia also advance to the last eight as one of the best third-placed teams as they finished third in the group with three points.
VAR was called in to confirm Abam’s strike in the third minute before Cameroon missed several scoring chances to keep the slim margin at the break.
Bella Rose’s header late in the game provided the opportunity for Nchout to score the winner and cement Indomitable Lionesses’ place in the quarter-finals.
Cameroon, who finished second in Group B, will play the runner-up in Group C while third-placed Tunisia will take on the winner of Group C.
Group winner Zambia will play Senegal in the quarter-finals.
Winners of the quarter-final matches will secure qualification to the 2023 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Two losers of the quarter-finals will have another chance to secure qualification as they will be engaged in inter-continental playoffs.
