South Africa’s Premier Soccer League side Cape Town City will participate in the Sportpesa Super Cup second edition slated for Kenya in June.
The tournament’s maiden edition took place in the Tanzania’s capital Dar Es Salaam with Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia emerging as winners after beating arch rivals AFC Leopards 3-0 in the final.
It brought together teams sponsored by the betting heavyweights (Sportpesa) namely Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Nakuru All Stars (Kenya), Simba SC, Yanga SC and Singida FC (Tanzania).
Tusker FC (Kenya) and Jang’ombe FC (Zanzibar) were roped in as guest teams to make an eight-team knockout tournament.
City have since joined the Sportpesa “family” and will grace this year’s edition in Nairobi scheduled to take place from 4-10 June, 2018.
Meanwhile, National Super League (NSL) side Nakuru All Stars will not take part this time after losing their sponsorship deal.
Guests for this year’s competition have not been confirmed but grapevine is rife that one of the Zambia’s most supported clubs could be invited.
For winning the 2017 gong, Gor earned a rare opportunity to play Premier League side Everton FC, a match they narrowly lost 2-1 with Wayne Rooney scoring a beauty.
The 2018 victors will travel to England to play the Toffies, subject to confirmation.
Cape Town City coached by former Bafana Bafana international Benny McCarthy is home to Kenyan striker Masoud Juma, who signed this year from KPL side Kariobangi Sharks.
City, who are placed 6th in the 16-team PSL, is also home to former AFC Leopards Ugandan midfielder Allan Kateregga.
Meanwhile, Sportpesa have showed interest to return as the KPL title sponsors in $750,000 a season deal but KPL are still negotiating for $900,000, according to close sources.
