Garry Rodrigues’ stoppage time goal earned Cape Verde a 2-1 victory over the Black Stars of Ghana in another entertaining match at the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.
The Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium was set for another classic with Egypt and Mozambique playing out to a 2-2 draw early in the day.
The result set up the two other teams in Group B to have a chance of going top of the Group.
The Blue Sharks took the early initiative in the 17th minute with Jamiro Monteiro getting the opener for the Islanders.
Ghana hit back with the Alexander Djiku in the 56th minute to bring Chris Houghton’s man level. Djiku headed home from Jordan Ayew’s corner, stooping to get his head to it as Cape Verde failed to clear an innocuous delivery.
There was heartbreak for the Black Stars just after the 90 minutes mark when Rodrigues struck to earn all three points for Cape Verde with an easy tap in from close range.
Delight for Cape Verde who go top of Group B with three points while Mozambique and Egypt have a point each. Ghana are bottom after the defeat with no point.
