Harambee Stars midfielder Victor Wanyama made history to become the first east African to captain an English side as he help the Saints booked their place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
With team captain, Jose Fonte starting on the bench , Southampton head coach Ronald Koeman made seven changes to the team that settled for a one-all draw with Liverpool in an English Premier League match charged the Harambee Stars skipper with the leadership role against Villa.
Wanyama, who joined the Saints from Celtic two seasons ago,was influential as second half goals from Maya Yoshinda and Graziano Pelle ensured that the Saints qualified for the quarters where they will now play host to Liverpool.
Scott Sinclair scored an injury-time consolation after Virgil van Dijk had fouled Jordan Ayew in the area.
