Burundi thumped Ethiopia 4-1 in the ongoing CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup group B match at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega, Kenya.

Goals from Pierre Kwizera, Cederick Urasenga, Laudit Mavugo and Shassir Nahimana sealed the first win of the competition for the coach Olivier Niyungeko’s side.

Dawa Hotessa scored the lone goal for the under pressure coach Ashenafi Bekele’s outfit that beat South Sudan 3-0 in their opening encounter.

Kwizera, who is the reigning Rwandan Premier League most valuable player, put Burundi in the lead in the 30th minute, but his effort was cancelled out by Dawa from the spot on the nick of half time.

Urasenga restored the lead after the breather in the 53rd minute before Simba SC striker Laudit Mavugo made it 3-1 in the 67th minute for his first of the campaign.

Shassir closed the chapter with the fourth and final of the match as Burundi climbed top of the group on four points.

Uganda, who drew nil nil against Burundi in the group’s opener Monday will take on winless South Sudan Friday with a chance to dislodge the Swallows from the helm.

Ethiopia will face Uganda in their last match. Two best finishers will proceed to the semi-finals.
