Tanzania and Libya played to a goalless draw in a CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
In a match of few chances,Kilimanjaro Stars coach Ammy Ninje fielded a youthful XI but his side were unfortunate not to take the lead as midfielder Ibrahim Ajibu had his shot diflected for unfruitful corner in the 35th minute.
Only a handful of chances fell to both sides and the draw was a reflection of this low-key encounter.
However, midway through the second half,Libya’s Said Saleh had the ball in the back of the net but the match officials ruled his effort offside.
Libya were pegged back towards the end of the half and were kept on their toes at the back as Elias Maguli combined with Mbaraka Yusuf and company to trouble the guest nation, but were unable to get their shots away.
The best chance of the half as far as the Tanzania were concerned fell to Mzamiru Yassin midway through, albeit from an offside position, striking the crossbar after the Simba midfielder’s strike took a touch off Erasto Nyoni en route to goal.
Level at the break and looking in desperate need of some inspiration, Taifa Stars surged forward but were disappointing in front of goal, as Maguli again miscued his attempt five minutes into the second half.
Libyans broke free with a clinical counterattack second later, but a misdirected effort from Taktak did little to trouble Aisha Manula.
Kennedy Juma replied with a free-kick, which he struck well, but could not do enough to get past Fathi, who made a straightforward save in the 53rd.
Both teams made a host of changes as the half played out but still neither side looked like scoring. Efforts from Hassan and Yusuph both well-constructed in the build-up, were disappointing in the finish.
Shiza Kichuya forced the Libya defence into a last ditch clearance off the line following a flowing move from the Tanzania where Maguli cut inside to get his shot away. It was deflected wide and out for a corner.
Ajbaidh Said who was criticised for not wanting to have a go at goal against the Libya, unleashed a powerful effort nine minutes from the end, which Manula punched away.
In the end, a disappointing finish for the Tanzania, who go to next match a reflective mood and face serious questions before the next match that will determine their chances for progress in the annual tourney.
