Regional inter-club championships CECAFA Kageme Cup will return this year from 28th June to 13th July in Tanzania after a three-year absence.
The tournament’s organizers confirmed the same Tuesday with release of fixtures that will see twelve teams from ten CECAFA member countries compete for the regional honors.
The teams have been placed in three groups of four. Top two finishers in each group and the best two losers will qualify for quarterfinal.
Hosts Tanzania will be represented by three teams namely the defending champions Azam FC, arch rivals Simba SC and Yanga SC.
Ethiopia’s St. George are making a return to the competition after missing the past few editions, while Uganda’s representatives are yet to named even with their domestic league already decided.
Sudan has given the tournament a wide berth and will not send a team despite the fact that CECAFA’s chairman Dr. Mutassim Gaffar is from the country.
Some interesting match-ups to look forward to at the in the round robin stage includes Simba versus Yanga in Group C on 5th July at National Stadium, Dar Es Salaam.
Dubbed Dar Derby, the clash is one of the most fiercely contested in Africa and will no doubt animate the tournament.
Rayon Sports of Rwanda will take on 2015 runners-up Gor Mahia of Kenya in a Group B match on 1st July at the National Stadium.
The two clubs recently played to a 1-1 draw in the CAF Confederation Cup Group D first leg match in Kigali with Rayon yet to visit Nairobi for the return match.
Rwanda President Paul Kagame remains the title sponsor of the competition and will inject $60,000 prize money while Azam TV will be the broadcast pertners.
