Congo will be aiming to build on their impressive start to the 2018 African Nations Championship (Chan) with a victory over Burkina Faso in a Group D showdown at the Stade Agadir in Morocco on Saturday.
Congo edged past Cameroon 1-0 in the first group match on Tuesday and a win tonight will see them with six points and book a spot in the knockout stages of the continental showpiece.
Red Devils found it difficult to break down Cameroon defence and had the referee to thank as he awarded a controversial penalty that was slotted in by Junior Makiese.
“We managed to win the three valuable points (against Cameroon) that will allow us to tackle this second match against Burkina Faso without any pressure. We must take the game very seriously and forget the victory from the first match,” said Congo coach Barthelemy Ngatsono.
“We will play the game to win, but on the pitch, we will have a strategy to manage the game well. I have asked the players to remain focused and challenged them to deliver an output that will ensure qualification, ” he added.
However, Burkina Faso were far from convincing in their opening game against Angola and only hard luck on their side to escape with a point after a goalless draw.
Burkinabe national team coach Drissa Traore credited their opponents in the aftermath of the clash, while also highlighting the importance of their upcoming fixtures.
“Our goal for the match against Congo is nothing other than victory. We will approach the match with a winning mentality. We have one point and we will have to win to revive our chances and be in a good situation going into the last match,”said Traore.
“I once worked in Congo and I know much about their football, which will be an important asset for me, to prepare for the clash.
In the other Group D match Angola take on Cameroon with both teams needing a victory to mount a serious challenge for a quarterfinal place.
