Libya defeated Rwanda 1-0 in the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) Group C match at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier, Morocco on Tuesday.
As a result, Libya advance to the quarter-finals, while Rwanda’s Amavubi bow out of the tournament.
The Amavubi were able to contain the North Africans in the opening exchanges but they could not create clearcut chances.
However, Rwanda made a mistake at the back in the eighth at stoppage time and they were punished by Elmutasem Abushnaf.
The East Africans attacked in numbers in from the start and Djabel Manishimwe had a chance to score in the 22nd minute.
However, the right-back fired over the crossbar after making a good run as the Amavubi pressed Libyans, who now under pressure.
Libyans then took control of the game but they also failed to convert their chances.
The score was 0-0 between Rwanda and Libya at half-time with the Amavubi having fought back to contain the North Africans.
It should have been 1-0 to Rwanda a minute into the second-half, but Libya goalkeeper Mohamed Camara made a brilliant save to deny Nikolas Kuhn.
Rwanda had a horror miss after 58 minutes when All Niyonzima beat the offside trap and with Thiery Manzi to his right had a situation with just Libya goalkeeper Mohammed Abdalla to beat.
However, Libya sat back and they launched counter attacks in the closing stages of the match, Elmutasem Abushnaf’s shot deflected over while Saleh Said also had a half chance but the game only really came in the final five minutes.
The game badly needed a goal, and it duly came with Abushnaf curling a peach of a shot in from the outside of the box, the ball thudding into the top corner of the stunned Ndayishimiye’s net.
