Zimbabwe FA President Dr. Philip Chiyangwa is planning a “football festival” to celebrate the new dawn in Zimbabwe following the peaceful exit from power of long serving Head of State Robert Mugabe Tuesday.
To this end, Chiyangwa, known for his high profile status in African football, has already engaged his equal opposite from South Africa Danny Jordaaan to organize a legends match between the two regional rivals.
Chiyangwa, who is also the president of COSAFA is also planning an international friendly for the senior men’s team famously known as Warriors on the same day.
The functions will happen at the National Heroes Stadium, Harare at a date yet to be fixed.
“Football is a game for the people and it’s the most popular sport in Zimbabwe and South Africa and I was talking to my counterpart Danny Jordaan and we agreed that our game should be seen to be playing a leading role the big changes that we have seen happening in this country, Chiyangwa said.
“It is against this backdrop that we have agreed that the Zimbabwe legends and the South African legends should play in a blockbuster match as part of those celebrations that have been happening across the country.
“As ZIFA, we are also exploring the possibility of our senior national team playing on the same day against an international opponent so that we make it a full package.”
ZIFA recently staged a successful match against visiting Barcelona legends which saw the Heroes Stadium filled to capacity.
Chiyangwa has already declared his interest in recapturing a parliamentary seat in his backyard in next year’s general elections on the ruling ZANU-PF party.
He was among the high profile guests during the swearing in of Emerson Mnangangwa as the new President of Zimbabwe at the Heroes Stadium.
