Clifford Mulenga has taken up the role of a “messiah” at Swallows

Zambian winger Clifford mulenga is once again grabbing headlines in south Africa .Mulenga may have just become the saviour of Moroka Swallows in the National First divisio[NFD].According to the official PSL website [www.psl.co.za] mulenga’s arrival has turned swallows season around.

The 2007 Glo-CAF young player of the year has a name well known to many South African football followers , the Zambian winger is currently making a big impact at Moroka Swallows. The 28-year-old has only been with Swallows for a couple of months, but has contributed significantly to the Birds’ recent revival.

Since first taking to field with Mulenga in their side,Swallows have hit a purple patch of form. In the five NFD matches he has featured in, the team has gathered 11 points, three wins and two draws. In the previous 22 matches this season, only 12 points were accumulated, and only two matches won – back in August and September last year.

The bottom line is that Swallows (15th), who had endured a run of 20 matches without a win in the league, appear to be showing great character in adversity – they are now up to 23 points and within touching distance – just two points, of two clubs sitting just above the relegation zone.

Mulenga has certainly played his part, scoring in a 2-1 win away at FC Cape Town, and in a 1-1 home draw with title-chasing Highlands Park. Should Mulenga succeed in helping Swallows beat the drop, it won’t be the first time he has helped orchestrate a late escape act: back in 2010, he scored twice to help Aces to a 2-1 win in a relegation play-off encounter with Black Leopards. The tie was to end 3-3 on aggregate, AmaZayoni winning on penalties to retain their top flight status.

Apart from Aces, the talented left-footed dribbling wizard has also played for Pretoria University, Bidvest Wits, Thanda Royal Zulu, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, Ajax Cape Town, Zesco United (Zambia) and Örgryte IS (Sweden).
